Taiji (太極) is one of the major Internal (nei jia 內家) Martial Art Form that is widely practiced by people all over the world. It is often described as “meditation in motion”. The movements are usually circular and never forced, the muscles are relaxed rather than tensed, the joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective tissues are not stretched. Taiji can be easily adapted for anyone, from the most fitted to people confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery. Although taiji is slow and gentle and doesn’t leave you breathless, it addresses the key components of fitness — muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and, to a lesser degree, aerobic conditioning.
This is a beginning class in part one of the traditional Yang Style Taiji 81 form. The teaching is based on the Yang style Da Jia (大架 large frame style) that is passed on by renown Grand Master Tung Ying Chieh (董英傑 ), one of the top disciples of the 3rd Generation Yang Taiji lineage holder Yang Chengfu (楊澄甫), The Hand Form has slow, steady, big, large and soft movements suitable for general practitioners, but also retains the martial aspect when it is learnt correctly.
Continuing students can learn the entire long Yang form in addition to a Fast Form Taiji, Tung Family Taiji Set, two person sets, weapon sets (straight sword and broad sword) and push-hands.
